A new technical reference for structural timber in India
India’s timber construction sector is entering an important phase of development. The National Building Construction Standards (NBCS) 2026, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), now formally references Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) as a structural timber species.

Under Part C – Structural Design, Section 3A – Timber, Annex A / Table 30, the standard provides mechanical property values for Douglas Fir, including density, modulus of elasticity, and permissible stresses for bending, shear and compression.
