Why Mass Timber Deserves a Place in the Future of Hospital Design | Artius

Every so often, a material comes along that makes us rethink how we build — not just for looks, but for how a space actually performs over time. Mass timber is one of those materials, and it's a conversation we've been watching closely.

We recently came across a piece by architect David Staczek of ZGF, published on Architizer, making the case for mass timber in hospital design. It's a perspective we think is worth sharing — and one that lines up closely with how we think about design at Artius.

The Short Version

Mass timber — large, engineered wood panels used for walls, floors, and roofs — is already reshaping offices, schools, and residential buildings thanks to its lower carbon footprint, faster construction timelines, and natural, biophilic feel. Staczek's argument is simple: those same benefits are exactly what healthcare clients are already asking for, yet not a single mass timber hospital is currently under construction in the U.S.


The barriers aren't really about the material itself — they're about catching regulation, structural planning, and infection-control standards up to what timber can actually do. Building codes are starting to shift in states like Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. Structural workarounds like hybrid steel-timber framing are already solving the beam-depth challenge. And early research on wood's effect on patient stress is promising, even if more study is still needed.


Globally, the model is already working. ZGF's BC Children's Hospital & BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre in Canada is proof that when the regulatory environment allows it, timber-led healthcare design isn't just possible — it's beautiful.


Where We Land on This

At Artius, we haven't built a hospital yet — but the underlying principle in Staczek's piece is one we live by in everything we design and engineer: the best-performing spaces are the ones where material choice, structure, and daily function are considered together from day one, not layered on as an afterthought. As a pioneer of Glulam and mass timber construction in India, pushing this material forward across residential, hospitality, commercial, and institutional projects, we see firsthand how thoughtful engineering shows up in how a space actually functions, long after it's built.


Healthcare may well be the next frontier for this material, and we're glad to see architects like Staczek pushing that conversation forward. It's the kind of shift in thinking that, over time, changes what "good design" is expected to look like.
